London, Paris, Milan, New York… you name it, we’ve been there. Fashion is something the world collectively shares, regardless of location or language. Aside from business plans and retail strategy, what’s happening on the international stage of fashion week is equally as important when it comes to understanding how to effectively utilise and promote a brand. But how is the start of the year shaping our trends and future forecasts?
As far as trends go, we can divide what we’re seeing strut down the catwalk into five main sections across all brand categories. Kicking off 2019, we can expect to see layering of a cross-section of prints and textures, drawing from extremely eclectic references. Silhouettes of hyper-bright colours can also be seen, alongside a smarter take on youthful aesthetics, with an overall more tailored fit. Tailoring itself will take a more minimalist approach this year, with classic-heritage inspired styles being continuously transformed, highlighting wardrobe versatility
Colour, print and fabric design are imperative to know when planning a strategy to showcase your brand. Deep spiced reds, limoncello yellows and softened lavenders will be key colour staples as 2019 fashion continues to evolve. Throwbacks to ‘way back when’ should also be expected, as the runways seeing resurrections of retro florals, dyes and checks, with nostalgia remaining a main theme are the 10s decade draws to a close. Fabric detailing can be seen through the return of fringing, draped necklines, sating and muted shines, making a multi-purpose outfit easily taken from daytime to eveningwear.
The final stage of runway analysis is knowing which items are going to be most successful in the current retail year. For apparel, the top of the crop includes big coats, the continued reign of over-sized dresses, waisted blazers, utility pants and asymmetric dresses. The trends of minimalism and enveloping proportions can really be seen here, wit silhouettes both moving away from the body or being more tightly sculpted to it. For footwear and accessories, mis-matched earrings pointed boots, slippers, top handled bags and ‘hiking boot’ hybrids are all worth the investment to keep ahead of the curve as we head into a brand new summer season.
